The Log

Two kinds of entries land here. Stops — I look around and write down what was actually worth remembering, no brochure gloss. And dispatches — the story between the pins, told straight. Newest first, one stream.

Croke Park “Whitey's”

♥♥♥♥♡

Found it the honest way: typed "pool tables near me" and walked twenty-one minutes into Southie. A different beast entirely — a proper dive with darts, a couple pool tables, and seating so tight you're basically in the next guy's game. The kind of room where people are quick to step up, and you can tell it could go sideways quick — but it never did. The crowd talked my ear off half the night: where to eat, why Dunkin' runs this town, keno the whole time. Loud in the right way, zero pretense. Call it a solid four — I had a good time and I'd walk back in tomorrow. If you need a bar to remind you what bars were for, this is the one.

SPIN Boston

♥♥♥♥♡

Landed in Boston with no plan past dinner and ended up in a private booth playing cutthroat Uno with a table of strangers who cheated like it was their job. That's the trick of this place — it's basically a pool hall for pongers: ping-pong tables, giant Jenga, Connect 4, a photo booth, food, craft beer, and enough room that nobody's on top of each other. Definitely a spot for the hipsters and the whole scene — not usually my crowd, but nobody's staring at a phone. Everybody's mid-game, talking trash, and twenty minutes in you've got nicknames. Walked in knowing nobody, walked out with a crew for the rest of the night. Boston's supposed to be full of angry people. Couldn't prove it here.

Lucky's Lounge

♥♥♥♥♡

Easy place to miss — a classy joint tucked away in a corner, speakeasy style, which is the whole point. Once you find your way in it's retro vintage front to back, like walking into another era, and a lot more comfortable than a hole-in-the-wall has any right to be. The bartender made the night: I went digging for Rolaids after a long day and accidentally asked him for Rolexes, and without missing a beat he offered to track down either one for me. Runs a little pricey for my blood, and I'm a gotta-have-something-to-do guy — darts, pool, horseshoes, anything — so a pure sit-and-sip room was never going to be my perfect bar. Still walked out happy. Dim, chill, run by people quicker than you. If you're in Boston and you like your bars hidden, find the door.

Jack Willie's Bar & Grill

♥♥♥♥♡

Hometown hero status, and they earn it — live music every single weekend. The catch: the website's been parked since 2018, so finding out who's playing means digging through their Facebook and Instagram. A place this good deserves a front door that shows the lineup. So I built one.

Hennessy's Irish Pub

♥♥♥♥♥

Full disclosure: Hennessy's is my home bar, so the rating's biased — but walk in on a band night and tell me I'm wrong. Everybody really does know your name in here, and the bar staff is why. Destiny, Erin and Johnny are always looking out — you're barely through the door and somebody already knows what you're drinking. Weekends it's a packed house. Pool tables, darts, trivia, live bands, a DJ depending on the night — enough going on that you don't need a plan. And it's one of the only spots in Oldsmar open late, which matters more than it sounds like it should. I've had nights here I don't fully remember and mornings I was grateful I didn't. Take that as the compliment it is. Real staple. If you're ever passing through, give em a shout.

Stix Billiards

♥♥♥♥♡

Stix is my kind of room. Wall to wall tables, good felt, and nobody rushing you off yours — nurse a beer and a bad break as long as you want. It runs a little quiet most nights, and honestly I don't mind that. Quiet means the table's yours. There's more here than pool if you're feeling it. They run tournaments, the food's genuinely good, and there's darts, hoops, and golf if that's your thing. Plenty of room to spread out, cold beer, zero pretense — nobody in here is performing. Broke even on the night, which for my pool game counts as a win. I fuck with this place. Enough that I built them a website to show what it could be.

The Melted State

♥♥♥♥♥

Update from Oldsmar: caught these guys catering a local event — raclette straight off the wheel, wine flowing, the whole nine. To die for doesn't cover it. A cart that can run a wedding-grade spread is the real deal. Couldn't recommend Tomek enough.
